Scarecrow Festival

There are many Scarecrow Festivals held around the country.
Our local one, Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales, is celebrated in August each year. It is amazing and inspirational to see how creative people can be by stuffing old clothes full of straw and hay! This is my idea of a great festival full of characters.

JANICE’S STORIES BEHIND THE PAINTING

1. Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales, two loves, which both have wonderful wools and yarns for my hobby of knitting.

2. Monty, my niece’s mischievous cat.

3. The International Harvester tractor, dated 1958, belongs to our neighbouring farmer. He has since renovated it, but I loved the rusty old version.

4. Making Corn Dollies was once a pleasant pastime for me.

5. I make bunting out of scraps of fabric and hang it over the door of our barn conversion. The flapping of the fabric in the wind stops the swallows flying in to make nests, as they used to do years before it became our dwelling.
