JANICE’S STORIES BEHIND THE PAINTING

SPRING BULBS

  1. The first sign of spring is when you see a swallow. These delightful birds nest in our neighbour’s barn each year.
  2. Skylarks. Memories of many a spring holiday and skylarks hovering in the air singing their happy song.
  3. I have a fascination of ornate keys. I often wonder if keys in the earth tell a story, did they fall from someone’s pocket or are they from a buried treasure chest?

SUMMER JEWELS

4. Crocosmia has a special place in my heart as it was one of my Dad’s favourite plants. I have a piece of the plant he grew and it is now thriving in my garden.

5. Crystals and Gems Stones. I particularly love Amethyst and Rose Quartz. The thought of these beautiful rocks growing in the earth for thousands of years is truly remarkable. We are all captivated with the earth’s jewels, especially gold and diamonds.

AUTUMN HARVEST

6. Red Kites, once nearly extinct, are now making a comeback. I was requested to put these in a picture by an avid jigsaw puzzle fan.

7. It is a lovely surprise to find pieces of old ceramic in the earth. I have always been interested in ceramics, mainly as I used to paint on china and porcelain.

8. My grandfather found an old silver coin while digging in his garden. I was very young at the time, and he gave it to me as a lucky charm.

WINTER WONDERS

9. The marvels of fossils are a delight when discovered. Millions of years ago, they were living animals on this earth. Pieces of amber, once resin from trees, capturing unsuspecting insects and locking them in for eternity.

10. The mole, a cute little creature but also a nuisance, especially the ones who played havoc with our garden lawn. We put upturned plastic bottles on sticks into their molehills, in the hope that the noise of the wind’s vibration will persuade them to go into the surrounding fields, and leave us in peace.
